What is a B Corp?
B Corp is a certification that publicly states that our company is balancing people, profit,
and planet. The B in B Corp stands for Benefit For All.
We are now part of a network of B Corps around the world, which are acting to change our
economic system and positively impact all stakeholders - our people, suppliers, our community, and our planet. Some famous B Corps include big-name brands our community and we love, including Patagonia, Tony’s Chocolonely, Dopper, Danone, Ben & Jerry’s, All Birds, Innocent and so many more. While there are now 9000 B corps around the world, and we are so proud to be one of them, there are not many hospitality companies with a B Corp - only 27 in the UK and Europe.
Why does it matter to me/ TSH?
Our purpose at TSH is to create a better society. We have always focused on our community - building and growing a supportive space where people can learn, work, play, and stay. As a real estate and hospitality business, we take up a lot of physical space in our cities, and we use a lot of ‘stuff’ to make our hospitality business thrive. Becoming a B Corp was a way for us to put both our social and environmental commitments and actions into an easily recognised framework, and join a bigger community of companies and people acting for both society and planet.
Why did TSH decide to become a B Corp?
This is something we’ve had on our radar for a while now, as we truly believe this
certification is the perfect way to benchmark and value our environmental and social efforts
equally. With the introduction of The Social Hub to the world in 2022, it made sense to
cement our new brand and positioning with B Corp certification as we were focused on our
purpose and mission to create a better society. Since then we have dived into our responsibilities as a business and felt this was the right time to join the global community of people doing better for people and the planet. We feel we can be a strong player in the movement due to our size and scale, and help lead our industry to be better. Becoming a B Corp works well with our values of Curious, Fun, Bold, Entrepreneurial, and Conscious, and our values stay the same.
How does being a B Corp benefit our community? Will there be any noticeable
changes for our community?
Our community can feel even better about their choice to stay with us! They know by spending their money with us, they are choosing to give it to a company that is having a positive impact on the world. We are very proud of our B Corp certification and will share it with the community in various ways. It won’t affect our room types and key products and experiences, but as part of the process of continuous improvement, we will continue to evaluate the way we do things, to make them as positively impactful as we can. Our B Corp certification will reassure our socially conscious audiences that we are keeping true to rigorous social and environmental criteria.
Does having a B Corp affect any of our relationships with existing partners,
investors or customers?
Being part of the B Corp community means we have a responsibility to ensure that our
suppliers, partners, and agencies (our supply chain) uphold and follow high ethical
standards, transparency, and good business practices.
On the Impact page of our website, we have a new Supplier Code of Conduct. We need to
continually evaluate both our existing relationships and also look at procurement choices in
the future. This is part of the B Corp mindset, and switching to a more sustainable supplier,
or one with a better track record of worker rights, environmental practices etc, can only
benefit us and our customers in the future. We also hope that we can inspire our existing
suppliers to improve their own impacts.
